Cisco UCS B480 M5

The Cisco UCS B480 M5 model refers to server hardware that is used when it is necessary to expand capabilities when working with large amounts of data or in the process of solving any tasks that require large resource capacities.

UCS B480 M5 are installed on network boundaries and are considered optimal server solutions, as well as systems for maintaining the operability of any application projects that work with large amounts of data.

more details

Description of Cisco UCS B480 M5

The main difference between this model is its high computing power and optimized for performing any tasks under critical loads, when compared with the previous generation of Cisco servers.

In view of this, such server hardware can be used for:

  • working with corporate software that requires the use of RAM in large volumes;
  • large-volume database management systems;
  • various resource-intensive virtualized workloads;
  • working with programs that consume a lot of hardware resources.

The high—performance resource component of the Cisco UCS B480 M5, as well as its proprietary Cisco UCS Manager management system, also means increased security, the ability to process large amounts of information without compromising reliability, manageability and performance requirements.

The optimal solution for resource-intensive tasks

The UCS B480 M5 model is based on Intel Xeon Scalable processors, and can be equipped with up to 4 chips on each “blade”. This allows you to get up to 112 cores on one machine.

In addition, this model can be equipped with up to 12 TB of DDR4 RAM, which allows you to work with visualization projects of various scales, as well as support databases, process online transactions, etc., without reducing the overall performance of the system.

The information on this server can be stored on SATA, SAS or NVMe type drives, or on M.2 bootable drives. In addition, the server supports solid-state drives.

The features of the Cisco UCS B480 M5 chassis do not provide separate control modules and cable management for them, which makes the architecture as flexible as possible, while reducing the financial costs of maintaining such equipment.

All servers are managed by the unified Cisco UCS Manager proprietary system, which allows you to work as productively, simply and transparently as possible with all Cisco servers connected to it through a unified factory.

Characteristics of the Cisco UCS B480 M5 blade server

The model has the following standard parameters:

  • the ability to connect up to 4 Intel Xeon Scalable series processors, incl. 2nd generation;
  • DDR4 RAM with a frequency of 2666/2933 megahertz. The server has 48 DIMM slots that support “slats” of 16, 32, 64 or 128 GB each, with a maximum of 6 TB of RAM;
  • Intel Optane DC Persistent Memory Modules (DCPMM) — 128G, 256G, and 512G can be installed on half of the slots;
  • 5 slots for connecting PCIe devices of the 3.0.1 standard:
    • 1 mLOM slot at the back supports Cisco UCS VIC 1340 adapter;
    • 2 mezzanine slots at the back work with Cisco VIC and GPU;
    • 2 more front mezzanine slots are designed for GPU;
  • An additional server data storage system allows you to use up to 4 2.5-inch SSD, SATA or SAS drives, as well as PCIe NVMe.

Advantages of Cisco UCS B480 M5 Blade Servers

The use of the Intel Xeon Scalable/2nd Generation processor family in the model, as well as the ability to connect DDR4 2666/2933 Mhz RAM up to 6 TB, gives an 85% performance increase when compared with the previous generation of servers — M4.

To expand the functionality of the blade server, the end user is provided with a maximum of 5 connectors for mLom and mezzanine compact form factor expansion cards. Optionally, you can install a Cisco FlexStorage RAID controller, which operates at a speed of 12 Gbit/sec.

In addition, the UCS B480 M5 server hardware can use 2 Cisco FlexFlash SD cards, which have RAID 0 support, and are used for a hypervisor or an operating system.
