VMware vCloud Director

VMware vCloud Director is the software responsible for managing the cloud. It is part of the vCloud Suite (vSC) utility.

vCloud Director comes with a fee-based license. It can only be purchased as part of three products: vCS Standard, Advanced or Enterprise.

If, however, the customer already has the vSphere package purchased, then a license upgrade to vCloud Suite will be required through a separate application to the vendor.

vCD is a cloud service management server that is delivered through the IaaS model.

The software allows you to do the following:

  1. Create or modify virtual data center settings, as well as virtual machines that are part of a DC.
  2. Configure rates to meet customer requirements. Possible implementation options: subscription, pay-as-you-go, etc.
  3. Automatically bill customers according to the selected rate plan.
  4. Multitenancy. It allows customers to consolidate users, virtual data centers and network switching into a single infrastructure. It also makes it possible to create standalone units that can be delivered to particular customers for rent on demand.

Distribution models

vCloud Director provides customers with 3 resource allocation options for virtual machines.

In the first case, the customer chooses a fixed percentage of their total resources. They also set quotas for the maximum possible percentage of allocation in the resource pool. This method is called Allocation Pool.

The second option is called Pay-as-you-go. There is no reserved percentage of resource allocation, the customer pays only for the actual usage. The limits are set at the virtual machine level.

And the last option is Reservation Pool. The customer reserves the necessary capacity for their tasks. The maximum resource limits are configured by the user.

VMware has developed a product called vCloud Director for managing virtual data centers. It is available only under a fee-based license and it offers a number of benefits both to providers and end users. There is a flexible adjustment of functions and resource allocation models to customer requirements.
